The dynamics of creating and sustaining learning communities

Stephen Dinham, ACER

Abstract

Extensive research has revealed the key role played by the individual teacher in the achievement of student outcomes. However contemporary research into quality teaching, teacher learning and educational change has also revealed the role played by learning communities and educational leadership in creating environments in which students and teachers can learn and teachers can teach. This paper draws upon four recent research projects involving primary, secondary and university teachers to highlight the dynamics of creating and sustaining a learning community so that teaching and learning can be transformed.
