The focus of this session will be on how the institutional repository can be used as a foundation for educating undergraduate students about issues surrounding open access, author rights and copyright, and how libraries can embed these concepts in information literacy sessions as well as in outreach efforts throughout the academic year. Several initiatives by IWU to highlight undergraduate work will be discussed.

We draw upon our own experience to discuss the use of undergraduate student journals to promote active learning by comparing and contrasting institution-focused (Park Place Economist) and externally-focused (Undergraduate Economic Review) publications, suggesting ways of integrating these journals into upper-division coursework, and describing ways in which economics departments can partner with libraries to facilitate the editorial process and increase the accessibility of the journal.

Completing the Research Cycle: The role of libraries in the publication and dissemination of undergraduate student research

Since the publication of Reinventing Undergraduate Education: A Blueprint for America's Research Universities (Boyer Commission 1998), many colleges and universities have committed to systematic programs of undergraduate research. Librarians are increasingly proactive in providing the tools and research support services necessary to build long-term relationships with undergraduate student researchers through a variety of services and outreach including instruction services, space for individual and group research, and targeted collection development. However, two crucial elements are under-developed: dissemination and persistent access to this scholarly work. With the production of original scholarly or creative work comes the expectation to disseminate and share the new knowledge or creation with the scholarly community. A large research university and a small liberal arts institution are collaborating to examine the range of current practices in libraries while documenting the experience of undergraduates in two very different environments. Specifically we ask: Does engagement in the publication and dissemination of their original research help students better understand academic inquiry and knowledge production? How do students understand publishing, intellectual property, and the significance of discrete collections of student research within the context of their broader Web lives? What are the current practices of academic libraries in supporting undergraduate research programs and how can libraries better support the last piece of the research process: publication and dissemination?

This presentation will discuss the catalyst, development and implementation of The Ames Library's institutional repository and records management programs after strategic planning in the library. The presenters will share their perspectives on the advantage of the parallel programs, and comment on the strengths, knowledge and work style each person brings to the table to make the partnership and programs work. Interwoven throughout the presentation will be examples of how "collisions" were navigated for specific collections. Both librarians will also provide their best practices for outreach and education to campus leaders, offices and departments to create buy-in, commitment to and excitement about their programs.

The area of human rights has had significant attention both nationally and internationally in the press and in the political arena. While there is a renewed commitment to human rights advocacy, there is also an upward trend in popular culture of depictions of torture. This article provides critical annotations of English-language reference sources, published since 1990, and available both in print and online, in an effort to aid librarians collecting and weeding materials for human rights research.

In 2004, Ames Library staff and librarians collaborated to create a Strategic Plan that would guide efforts to improve existing services and develop new ones. Part of the plan called for re-visioning media services to be more collaborative with faculty and information technology staff. This presentation will discuss how the transition from media center to digital center began and how it has impacted services, staffing, technology and relationships in and outside the library.

Illinois Wesleyan University (IWU) has launched an institutional repository that focuses on student research papers, portfolios, and publications, while also welcoming faculty scholarship. IWU has enlisted students from Political Science, Economics, English and the School of Music to participate, allowing us to explore the administrative challenges of scholarly output in various media along with issues of copyright. In the future, the IWU Digital Commons will help students disseminate their work to external constituencies and provide a means to IWU to share undergraduate research with prospective students and alumni. The repository is also reaching out to faculty, and working with music and theatre arts work as well as textual scholarship. The poster session explains our approach and discusses strengths and weaknesses of it.
