Socioeconomic Inequities in Maharashtra

Srijit Mishra, Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research

Abstract

Theis chapter analyses socioeconomic inequities in the state of Maharashtra looking at regions as well as sub-groups of the population, using indicators of income, poverty and educational attainment among others. It is observed that the high per capita income in the state has not ‘trickled down’ to the poor, resulting in levels of poverty that are even higher than the national average. It also briefly traces the declining share of agricultural sector in the state’s economy and looks at increasing incidence of farmers’ suicides from a socioeconomic as well as public health perspective.
