Shawna Hanel is an internationally exhibited fine art photographer. A Boise native,
she received her initial training at BSU before pursuing her M.A. (equivalent to an
American M.F.A.) at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University) in
Australia. Her creative work is diverse; ranging from detailed nature studies to highly
structured and staged compositions, often crucially contextualized by accompanying text.
What unifies this work is an abiding concern with how we ought relate to the world in
which we live. It has been exhibited widely, both within the United States and overseas.
Shawna is also an accomplished technical photographer. She shares her outstanding skills
with the BSU community both as a photo lab manager and teacher. She recently developed
service-learning curricula which unify her artistic, technical and social justice
concerns.
