This is one of the first published articles in English that reviews that status of ruined synagogues in Eastern Europe after the fall of Communism. The article draws on the authors work and expereicnes as Director of the Jewish Heritage Council of the World Monuments Fund beginning in 1989 through the time of publication (1993).

The articles is now a piece of history - so much has changed in nearly a quarter century (though some things remain the same).
