A native of Venezuela, Rosa Julieta Castro's own research interests are in the area of intellectual property, trade law and law and economics. She earned a law degree from the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello and a master's degree in law and economics from the Universität Hamburg. She is currently working toward a joint doctorate degree in law and economics from the Università di Bologna.
