Roland Sturm (Ph.D., Economics, Stanford University, 1991) is a Senior Economist at
RAND and Professor of Policy Analysis at the RAND Pardee Graduate School. Dr. Sturm is
the author of 150 scientific publications and has testified on health and health care
policy in Congress and state legislatures many times. His current research analyzes the
relationship between environments, lifestyle, and health outcomes with funding from
NICHD, NIAAA, NIEHS, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. From 1996 to 2003, Dr. Sturm
directed the economic and policy research program of the joint RAND/UCLA Research Center
on Managed Care and was awarded the National Institute of Health Care Management's
Award for excellence in health services research in 2001. 

Outside his professional work, he is an active volunteer in a number of community
organizations. He leads a monthly music session at the California Traditional Music
Society, teaches after-school fiddle classes in local title 1 schools; organizes concerts
for the National Park Service, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Topanga
Banjo and Fiddle Festival, Southern California’s oldest and longest running traditional
music event. In the fall, he usually coaches an AYSO soccer team and at other times of
the year spends far too much time riding his mountain bike in the Santa Monica mountains.
