• Presentation: Legal and Ethical Issues: Minors & Trauma
Central Virginia Counselor Development Symposium (2018)
  • Robin Switzer, Liberty University
Abstract
Review of the particular ethical and legal issues that can arise for counselors when working with minors with trauma. Includes scenarios experienced and strategies to avoid pitfalls of reporting, legal cases, techniques, documentation and expectations of treatment.

Working with children and teens has its own set of ethical and legal issues that require a counselor’s focus and attention. When minors are victims of trauma, specific issues may arise, forcing a counselor to navigate mandated reporting laws, ethical guidelines, court cases, outside treatment expectations and confusion of the role the clinician maintains. Potential misuses of the clinician’s role can be misconstrued and used to potentially harm clients, including documentation, techniques and information obtained in sessions.

This presentation will review potential pitfalls for the counselor, share real life experiences from the field and discuss strategies to ensure counselors are prepared to navigate the unique circumstances when working with minors touched by trauma.
