Abstract
Chapters in this unfinished manuscript alternative between theory and narratives -- Thomas's theory of individuation and narratives describing recent aspects of life in particular Indian tribes. Thomas died before he and Cooter could finish the manuscript in 1995. Cooter still hopes to do so.
