About Robert D Reason

Dr. Reason serves as the Director of the Research Institute for Studies in Education (RISE). He currently leads a collaboration between RISE and the Association of American Colleges and Universities to assist higher education institutions to assess and improve civic learning for personal and social responsibility in college through the Personal and Social Responsibility Inventory. This recent work around issues of civic learning is part of a broader interest, and scholarly history, in the influence of institutional policies affect learning environments for students. Dr. Reason has completed several studies of first-year student learning outcomes and is a noted expert on issues of student persistence in college. 

Dr. Reason currently serves as the Chair of the ACPA Senior Scholars and will assume the role of Associate Editor of the Journal of College Student Development in July 2015. He is the co-author (with Dr. Kristen Renn of Michigan State University) of a widely adopted textbook titled, College Students in the United States: Characteristics, Experiences, and Outcomes (Jossey-Bass, 2013). Before returning to Iowa State, Dr. Reason was a faculty member and Senior Research Associate at Penn State University's Center for the Study of Higher Education.
