Abstract

The research object was a medical waste incineration plant with a flue-gas treatment system based on dry sorption agent injection to combustion gases before a high-efficiency particulate collector. A combustion system was consisted with the fluidized bed reactor (starved air gasifier) and the secondary combustion chamber. As the dry absorbent was used a mixture of high reactive hydrated lime and activated carbon. Activated carbon content in the mixture was 5-10 % by mass. The absorbent was injected in the minimal recommended amount (4-5 kg/h). Applied collector was a ceramic filter with total filtration area of 120 m2 and guaranteed outlet dust concentration under 5 mg/Nm3. Among other things the aims of research were evaluation of removal efficiency selected gaseous compounds (SO2, NOx, HCl, HF, HCN and BTX) from flue-gas and possibilities of compliance with the air emission limit values for waste incinerators.

Based on carried out measurements and analysis it was claimed that high efficiency of the flue-gas cleaning was only for such substances like SO2, HCN and ethyl benzene. This type of full dry flue-gas treatment system is not adequate enough for other pollutants existing in gas phase (for example HCl). Consequently, the system cannot to comply with the emission limit values during temporary increasing of the substances released from the incineration process. This problem can also concern other substances (like HF, NOx and SO2) in the event of incineration of hazardous wastes with much higher fluorine, nitrogen and sulphur content. In these cases, optimization of operating conditions for the dry flue-gas treatment system or application of more effective methods for the air emissions control may be necessary.
