Prior to joining Liberty University School of Law in 2006, Rena Lindevaldsen served as Senior Litigation Counsel to Liberty Counsel, a nonprofit litigation and education organization dedicated to advancing religious freedom, the sanctity of human life, and traditional family. She presently serves as Special Counsel to Liberty Counsel. At the law school, she teaches Foundations of Law, Family Law, First Amendment Law, Lawyering Skills, Appellate Advocacy, Federal Jurisdiciton, and the Constitutional Litigation Clinic. At Liberty Counsel, she was actively involved in efforts throughout the country to preserve traditional marriage through litigation, legislation, and constitutional amendments. She filed the first lawsuit to enjoin San Francisco’s efforts to “marry” same-sex couples and obtained two orders enjoining public officials in New York from officiating same-sex unions. She successfully challenged New York City’s decision to publicly fund a high school for homosexual students and a Maryland school board’s decision to implement sex education curriculum that presented materials hostile to conservative, religious beliefs. She was part of the legal team defending Lisa Miller, a woman who was embroiled in interstate litigation with her former same-sex partner over the right to parent her biological child. That litigation was a test case in the nation for the strength of the federal DOMA and state marriage amendments. Through the law school’s Constitutional Litigation Clinic and her ongoing relationship with Liberty Counsel, she continues to be involved in litigation that advances religious freedom, the sanctity of human life, and traditional family as she supervises students who are committed to restoring the moral foundations of law.
