Abstract

Responding to patron concerns about an animal in the library can be a difficult scenario for library professionals. But what if the animal in question is a service animal? How do library professionals best respond to patron concerns while respecting the rights of an individual with a disability and their service animal? This proposed poster session will provide an overview of how an academic library developed a Best Practices document for its personnel in order to consistently and respectfully address concerns about service animals, emotional comfort animals, and therapy animals. Furthermore, this document resulted in tailored recommendations for specific service points within the library with the overall goal of reducing ambiguity and frustration on both sides of the public service desk. This poster session provided an overview of the inception, implementation, and conclusions associated with the Best Practices process. Attendees will have new knowledge, and some resources, to begin this conversation within their own library. The session identified common definitions in order to build a shared vocabulary for increased understanding of this demographic, and provide training outlines for addressing personnel information needs. Furthermore, attendees received a handout with an electronic bibliography of resources. Though aimed at attendees affiliated with academic libraries, sharing this project with the Diversity & Outreach Fair participants provides useful information for any library setting that offers multiple service points for their patrons.
