Rashelle B. Hayes, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Preventive and
Behavioral Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts
Medical School. She is also an instructor in the accredited Tobacco Treatment Specialist
(TTS) Training and Certification Program within the Center for Tobacco Treatment Research
and Training. She received her PhD in clinical psychology from Virginia Commonwealth
University and post-doctoral training in behavioral medicine from Brown University/The
Miriam Hospital. Her primary research interests are in health behavior change, health
disparities, tobacco control, and health communication. Specific recent research
interests include: developing and examining smoking cessation treatment for underserved
populations (e.g. Latinos, light and intermittent smokers) and populations with
co-morbidities (e.g. cancer, depression), implementing treatment in the context of
teachable moments or hospital/primary-care clinic settings, augmenting risk perceptions
and health communication messages to motivate cessation behavior, and in training health
care providers to implement clinical practice guidelines in tobacco treatment.
