Associate Professor Nickolas received his BMath from the University of Newcastle,
NSW and his PhD on ‘Free topological groups and free products of topological groups’ from
the University of NSW, Sydney.

Professional Activities and Affiliations: • Member, Institute for Mathematics & Its
Applications • Member, Standards and Quality Subcommittee (SAQS) University of Wollongong
• Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Informatics from mid-2009 till the present

Current Research Students: No current PhD students, but his former PhD student Ali Elfard
has recently had his thesis on 'Free paratopological groups' approved

Fields of Study: (1) Topological and paratopological groups: subgroups of free
topological groups and free products of topological groups and certain general properties
of topological groups, usually outside the realm of locally compact groups; general
properties of free paratopological groups. (2) Geometry of metric spaces: the study of
spaces of functions and measures over compact metric spaces and their relation to the
geometry of the spaces
