Commencing tertiary studies at the University of NSW, Dr Hyland received his BSc (Maths) in 1974. A Graduate Diploma in Education (Maths) from the University of Wollongong followed in 1975. Continuing his studies at UOW in 1989, a further Graduate Diploma in Commerce (Business Information Systems) and a Masters of Commerce (Hons) were conferred. Dr Hyland received his PhD in 2001 with the thesis topic, “Supporting the analysis and retrieval of external statistical data by casual and novice users’. Various teaching roles followed along with work at the Catholic Education Office, Wollongong.
