Abstract
The Wells College Book Arts Center presents Peter D. Verheyen, the 48th Susan Garretson Swartzburg ’60 Memorial Book Arts Lecture.
At this illustrated lecture on October 17, 2019, Verheyen spoke about his career as a bookbinder, conservator and academic librarian. Along with examples of his work, he discussed the materials and techniques he uses to craft his bindings, with selections of his bindings for attendees to explore. He also discussed his 25 years of building online book arts communities, and a recent project which ties together the many threads of his long and accomplished career. Among the facets discussed were how his experiences and the mentorship he received as a work-study student guided him to apprentice in his “native” Germany; the materials and techniques he uses to craft his bindings, many of which have been exhibited throughout the US and abroad. In addition to slides, he brought a selection of his bindings and some of the tools and materials he uses in his work, for attendees to explore.
