Abstract

The challenge of modernity for Orthodoxy as experienced by Archimandrite Makary (Mikhail lakovlevich Glukharev) is presented here through a brief exposition of Makary's career, its successes, failures and inner tensions. Particular attention is given to Makary's role in the struggle for a Russian-language Bible.
