Dr. Gerkin completed his Ph.D. in sociology, with emphasis in criminology and race and ethnic relations at Western Michigan University in 2006. After teaching for two years at Mesa State College, in western Colorado, Dr Gerkin returned to his home state and joined the faculty at GVSU in the Fall of 2007. Dr. Gerkin’s teaching and research interests center on restorative justice, white collar crime, classic and contemporary criminology, and the drug crime nexus. Courses taught at GVSU include Criminology, Research Methods, Youth Culture and Crime, and Justice and Society. Other interests include camping, hiking, biking, playing soccer, and traveling and exploring other cultures.
