About P. Raymond Lamonica

Professor Lamonica has returned to the full-time faculty after having served part-time and then full-time as General Counsel to the LSU System for many years. He is the J.B. Nachman Professor of Law. His usual areas of teaching are in the areas of Federal and State Civil and Criminal Procedure. He has also taught Evidence, Legislation, and Litigation-related courses.
Prior to joining the faculty in 1972, Professor Lamonica was law clerk to the chief judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana in Shreveport and practiced with a Baton Rouge firm. After joining the law faculty, in addition to teaching, Professor Lamonica was director of clinical legal education, served as special counsel to the Criminal Justice Committee of the House of Representatives and as counsel to the Speaker of the House of Representatives. He has been appointed special master/receiver by state and federal courts in several complex civil matters. While on leave from the Law Center, he was appointed by the Supreme Court to serve as a District Judge for the Nineteenth Judicial District in Baton Rouge (1980). He also served as Executive Counsel to the Governor of Louisiana (Treen, 1983-84), and court-appointed and then President-appointed United States Attorney for the Middle District of Louisiana (1986-94). Upon return to the Law Center in 1994, he served as vice chancellor for three years and also resumed teaching. While teaching, Professor Lamonica, upon request of the Office of Governor and Attorney General, has represented the state as special counsel on select legal matters principally in the areas of gaming regulation and litigation, environmental regulation and litigation, and complex federal litigation. He is a lifetime member, by invitation, of the American Bar Foundation.
