The Massillon Academic Success Project: An Investigation of How Disadvantaged African American Students Can Rise Above Barriers to Academic Achievement

Abstract
This study examine academic performance of seniors; that is, specific information related to Academic Curriculum, GPA, ACT scores, and Days Absence or Tardy - in relationship to achievement. The acronym TIGERS addresses recommendations: Team approach to student success; coordinate services, programs and plans with all stakeholders Inspire students, parents, teachers, community programs, churches to become involved - identify champions! Guidance and mentoring models are essential; role models and real data are indispensable – graduate students with a vision of success. Experiment with intervention models and educate your parents, teachers, church leaders, community program directors, and school administrators by developing workshops and in-service training programs until a solution is found. Rational and practical approach to guidance and instruction, keeping it simple and clear. S tart now! Be sensitive to needs, wants and desires, but spend the necessary amount of resources to address student success
