Born in the United States, Dr Strong Cincotta came to Australia in 1977. She has taught at both secondary and tertiary levels in both the U.S. and Australia. Her BA was in French, Italian & Spanish. Her MA was in Italian language and literature. Her PhD was in the field of philosophy, the first PhD in that area granted by the University of Wollongong. She is a NAATI accredited literary translator (Italian-English). Dr Strong Cincotta’s teaching career has included the teaching of Academic English, linguistics, Italian, French and language teaching methodology. She was Coordinator of the Division of Languages & Linguistics at the University of Western Sydney before retiring in 2001. Since retirement, Dr Cincotta took up the study of Chinese and has taught language teaching methods in China. Interested in intercultural communication and the difficulties of academic writing in a second language, she now dedicates her time to helping over-seas post-graduate students and other academics in this area Field of Study: the teaching and learning of languages (English, Italian & French)Literary translation Professional activities and affiliations: Although now retired, Dr Cincotta was the Chair of the NSW Community Languages Schools Board, a Commissioner on the NSW Ethnic Affairs Commission (now the Community Relations Board) and the President of the Wollongong Chapter of the Dante Alighieri Society as well as a member of the Modern Language Teachers’ Association and of the Australian Institute of Translators and Interpreters (AUSIT)
