Professor Mary Barrett's research interests focus broadly on the learning
organisation, in two senses of the term: learning OF and learning BY organisations. Under
learning 'of' organisations, Mary researches career development and leadership
issues, especially family business management and leadership, women in family business,
women in management (including academic managers), and women entrepreneurs. Under
learning 'by' organisations, Mary researches how members of organisations learn
through their organisational communication processes, so perpetuating the
organisation's culture(s), identity(ies), and values. The two areas of
organisational learning are regularly linked, eg via her work on communication and gender
issues at work.
