Mergers & Acquisitions (2005)

Abstract

A shake-up in the food retailing industry is forcing farming cooperatives to use stock to raise capital, make acquisitions, and hone their competitive abilities. The need to access the capital markets is the primary driving force behind the conversion of co-ops to corporations. In particular, farming co-ops owned and controlled by member farmers increasingly are considering the for-profit way of raising cash. A sidebar discusses three farming co-ops that are hoping to go public.
