About Mark Sutherland

A College of DuPage (COD) faculty member since 1990, Professor Mark J. Sutherland teaches Earth Science courses in the Division of Health and Sciences, and in the departments of Field and Experiential Learning and formerly in the Center for Independent Learning (now closed), having served as an area coordinator for science, early childhood education and allied health.
An educator for over 30 years, Sutherland has led the conception, design, implementation and assessment for curriculum development and instruction of several earth science and geology courses at College of DuPage. Versatility and content expertise has found him teaching not only in the traditional classroom setting, but also online, through flexible learning programs in the former Center for Independent Learning, and in remote locations such as Hawaii, the Canadian Rockies, and Grand Canyon through the Field and Interdisciplinary Studies program.
Sutherland has developed numerous curricular materials, reviewed instructional geology and earth science textbooks for publishing companies (McGraw Hill), served on COD Faculty Senate, and held several committee appointments (Program Review, Institutional Effectiveness, ACPAC).
Sutherland is a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University (B.S. Geology) and the Department of Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) (M.S., Geology), and also holds NYS Teacher Certification Earth Science grades 7-12. His thesis titled, "Petrology and Provenance of Miocene Sedimentary Rocks, Point Sur, California: Implications for Offset Along the San Gregorio-Hosgri Fault Zone" was published in 1990 (UCLA). He is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Mayflower Society.
