A native of Guatemala, María Luisa Beltranena´s own research interests are in the area of civil law, Roman law, legal history and legal methods. She obtained a law degree and a doctor in laws degree from the University Francisco Marroquín, where she teaches and directs the private law department. Formerly Dean of the law school at Rafael Landívar University, she also served as Minister of Education, and sat on the Guatemala's Supreme Court of Justice and Electoral Court. She is a recipient of the Jon Mills Award for Significant Contributions to Relations Between Florida and the Americas, granted by the University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law.
