Summer’s Lease, watercolors by Lynn Sondag

Abstract
Lynn Sondag’s expressive watercolors represent the variety of tones found in daily walks. Subtle variations evoke ripples of the Pacific West Coast light, slight movements, and the anticipation of changes to come further down the trail.

Developed over fifteen years of walks in San Francisco’s Presidio, this imagery of Bay Area
coastal landscapes, and the Sea Cliff neighborhood perched atop the cliffs at Land’s End, demonstrates what Sondag describes as “new perspectives” – occurring when a familiar place is transformed by fog, light, and wind.

It is impossible to depict this region without acknowledging that it is defined by the sea. In her Ocean Beach series Sondag changes her perspective to capturing the play of light and wind on the Pacific Ocean.

Along with the original watercolors Sondag is displaying a hand-bound accordion fold book. Each book in this series represents one of the Presidio’s trails. Just as the wanderer’s immediate surroundings change with each turn of the trail, the images in these books take us on a journey, what Sondag calls the “unfolding narrative” of being in nature.
