Adult Learning (2003)
  • Linda M. Golian-Lui, Kennesaw State University
Abstract
This article highlights the author's librarian leadership journey, sharing how mentoring has influenced her professional life direction and how mentoring has fostered the development of the author's leadership skills. The author began her library career in 1981 as a paraprofessional at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. She chose this job not as a career path, but because the position provided free tuition benefits that would help her accomplish the most important life goal she had at that time, obtaining a bachelor's degree. The most influential informal mentoring experience during the author's library leadership career was the result of her participation in the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL)/Harvard Leadership Institute, which is designed to address the leadership demands of today's academic libraries, the ACRL/Harvard Leadership Institute helps current and aspiring library leaders examine workplace situations through a wide variety of frameworks for eventual decision-making. Participating in this program allowed the author to network with both seasoned library leaders and aspiring library leaders from across the country. The author realized that mentoring is an essential part of her library leadership journey.
