The Marian Gould Gallagher Law Library at the University of Washington is a large academic law library, open to faculty, students, alumni, attorneys, and members of the public. The library contains at least 450,000 print volumes and has 75,000 linear feet of filled shelf space. During the 2009-10 academic year we circulated over 24,000 items and shelved approximately 45,000 items. Svengalis recommends law libraries inventory their collections at least once a year. Our library began a pilot inventory control project to ensure our catalog accurately reflects what is on our shelves and identify any remaining unresolved issues stemming from automation and reclassification. We use the University of Illinois’s Library Stacks Management System, originally designed for the Voyager ILS, and modified by our systems librarian to work with Millennium. This poster covers the structure and workflow of our program and illustrates how we draw on the integrated nature of library departments to identify and resolve issues with missing items, as well as technical issues involving barcodes, call numbers, and discrepancies between physical items and catalog records. This poster highlights interdepartmental cooperation, project management, an innovative use of library technology, and collection development and analysis.

Fandom is a term used to describe a subculture of fans of a particular television program, movie, book, or artist, brought together by a love and desire to celebrate that show, movie, etc. With the advent of the internet fandom has physically manifested itself into various forms including fan fiction, fan art, fan craft, video mash ups, and charity screenings. In each of these categories fans "create" works which draw on, or occasionally, use completely, the characters, settings, and situations of the fandom. Such manifestations have implications in the intellectual property world. Works of the fandom communities should be utilized in teaching copyright and trademark law in traditional law school curriculum. Because these works are predominately created by female fans, incorporating such materials in the copyright/trademark classroom may broaden the appeal of the subject to female students.
