Abstract

As a student teacher I became greatly motivated to examine ability grouping. Ability grouping is a popular practice among schools today where teachers group their students based on their academic performance in a given subject. My research focused on three main questions:

1) What are student and teacher perceptions of ability grouping?

2) Do students perform better academically when they are grouped by ability?

3) Are there any ethical or social conflicts involved when students are grouped based on ability?
