A native of Morocco, Lahcen Haddad holds a Ph.D. in comparative cultural studies
from the University of Indiana. He has been co-academic director of the SIT Morocco:
Multiculturalism and Human Rights program since 2000 as well as professor of development
and cultural studies at Mohamed V University, Rabat, Morocco since 1984. For the last
twenty years, he has taught at different universities in the US, Europe, Morocco, and the
Middle East, and for the last 12 years, he has served as strategic management and policy
expert on projects for international development organizations and consultancies in
several countries in Europe, the Middle East / North Africa, Africa (South of the
Sahara), and Asia. Lahcen Haddad has published five books, half a dozen training manuals,
approximately twenty academic articles, and several hundred journal pieces in Arabic,
English, and French in the fields of social science, development studies, cultural
studies, communication, and management. Lahcen Haddad is a regular guest on Moroccan,
Arab, and international television channels, asked to comment on political and economic
events in the region and around the world. Very active in civil society organizations, he
is president of Boujad for Sustainable Development, one of the founders of Tanmia.org,
and a member of the Committee for the Promotion of Girls’ Schooling in Rural Areas. He is
also a member of the Political Bureau of the Mouvement Populaire, a center-right Moroccan
liberal party. He serves as a King of Morocco appointee member of the National
Observatory for Human Development.
