Professor Tapsell is a leading Australian researcher in Nutrition and Dietetics She
began her career with a Bachelor of Science (majoring in Biochemistry and Pharmacology)
and Graduate Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics (University of Sydney,1976)followed by a
Masters in Health Personnel Education (UNSW, 1985) and a PhD in Public Health and
Nutrition (Wollongong 1996). Her career began as a dietitian and has included employment
in hospital and community health settings, before moving to in academia, management and
research 1990. 

Apart from leading the research team at the Smart Foods Centre, Professor Tapsell also
jointly manages the Food and Health Strategic Research Initiative at the University, and
has previously led the National Centre of Excellence in Functional Foods. 

Since 2003, Professor Tapsell has been the Editor in Chief of Nutrition & Dietetics,
the scientific journal of the DAA and Dietitians New Zealand. She is leading the
Scientific Program Committee for the International Congress of Dietetics, to be held
later this year in Sydney. 

She serves on several scientific advisory panels in Australia and overseas, most recently
the Expert Working Group on Climate Change and Food Security (Prime Minister’s Science
Engineering and Innovation Committee), and the Dietary Guidelines Working Committee
(National Health and Medical Research Council).
