A collection of 375 calcined turtle bone fragments was recovered from the Little Ossipee North site located in southwestern Maine, USA. The assemblage is the second largest reported and studied from New England. Burning bone causes it to shrink as water is lost. Archaeological turtle size and age was estimated from measurements of bone shrinkage derived from modern-day turtles that were burned experimentally. Both emydids and kinosternids were identified in the archaeological collection. Analysis of the remains suggests that immature turtles were harvested in the fall.
