A Brief Introduction into the Use of Content Analysis in Qualitative Research
Abstract
The use of qualitative research in information systems and technology research is presently not well understood. This brief introduction into content analysis offers a look at how the method has been previously applied by biblical scholars and draws out useful lessons that are universal to other fields of inquiry. A comparison between automated methods of content analysis and manual methods are provided with a focus on powerful representation tools such as concept maps. The paper argues that qualitative content analysis can aid in revealing patterns and trends especially in the domain of the social implications of emerging technologies. The paper also demonstrates the value of using automated content analysis tools where the analysis of large amounts of data is required.
