Dataset
Quran (Uthmani) Acronym, Acrostic, and Telestic Searchable (Arabic) Database
(2023)
  • Keith L Yoder, University of Massachusetts Amherst
Description
This Excel file contains two searchable databases of initial and final Arabic Unicode consonantal letters of each consecutive word and Aya, compiled from the Uthmani (minimal) Quran dataset from Tanzil.net. Combination letters have been normalized to their primary base letter except for the Unicode characters Alef Maksura and Teh Marbuta. The first table, at tab "All_Text", covers the entire traditional text, while the second table, at tab "Excl_Text", is based on all text except the Basmala headers of Sura 2-8 and 10-114. Word and letter counts are also displayed. This file is intended to parallel and supplement the previous searchable Quran database file based on the "simple clean" Tanzil.net text, that is still available at https://works.bepress.com/klyoder/57/.

The records for each consecutive Aya display strings of the initial and final letters of each word in that Aya, with space separators between each letter. The record immediately following the last Aya of each Sura contains the corresponding strings of initial and final letters of the first word of each Aya in that Sura, and the initial and final letters of the last word of each Aya in the Sura. Thus, the user may easily search for any string of Arabic Unicode letters, with space separators, as potential acronyms (at the Aya level) or as acrostics, mesostics, or telestics (at the Sura level). For completeness, users may also want to search for reverse letter strings.
