Gary, Indiana was at the forefront of the American steel industry in the early twentieth century, but the significance of this city extended far beyond America. Gary was the shining model that inspired Stalin’s government to build Magnitogorsk, the city that housed the Soviet Union’s first steel plant. This session explores the connected histories of Gary and Magnitogorsk through images, videos and other primary source materials. This session provides content and pedagogical tools for high school history teachers to incorporate local history into a world history context.
