About Kimberly Edginton Bigelow

Kimberly Bigelow is an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Dayton. She also holds a joint appointment in the Bioengineering Masters Program. Upon joining the university in 2009, Dr. Bigelow established a departmental focus area in biomechanics and also opened the Engineering Wellness through Biomechanics Lab. Dr. Bigelow is an experimentalist in the clinical biomechanics field, focusing on the evaluation of postural control and gait. Her research interests include  improving mobility in individuals with multiple sclerosis and other neurological conditions, preventing falls in older adults, optimizing ankle-foot orthosis prescription, developing assistive devices, and studying human movement variability by applying non-linear analysis techniques. Her work is highly interdisciplinary and she works especially closely with her long-time clinical collaborator Dr. Kurt Jackson in UD's Department of Physical Therapy. Drs. Bigelow and Jackson have engaged over 150 undergraduate engineering students and doctor of physical therapy students together in meaningful research. Four of Dr. Bigelow's students have been awarded prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships to continue to pursue biomechanics research. Dr. Bigelow serves on the Executive Board of the American Society of Biomechanics and is an associate editor for the Journal of Applied Biomechanics. In addition to her work in biomechanics, Dr. Bigelow is also active in the engineering education community, including an emphasis area in teaching and incorporating universal design into the engineering curriculum.
