Abstract

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the problem-solving approach that nurses and other health professionals use to determine an effective course of action for patient care. Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt’s (2019) EBP steps begin with cultivating a spirit of inquiry and include the following: 1. Creating a focused, searchable clinical question using the PICO method; 2. Systematically searching for the best evidence; 3. Critically appraising the evidence; 4. Integrating the evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences and values; 5. Evaluating the practice change or outcome; 6. Sharing the results locally and beyond. The focus of this Teaching EBP Column is on Step 3: critically appraising the evidence. Critical appraisal is the process of systematically evaluating evidence for its strengths and weaknesses and its value to clinical practice.
