Getting Meta: Ethnographers of Ethnographic Learning and the Team Teaching of a Doctoral Course on Team Ethnography

Abstract
Learning to do ethnographic research is a rite of passage in anthropology, and often it starts with a field school experience.  However, as ethnography has come to be employed across different disciplines, the ways of learning to do ethnography have necessarily shifted. This presentation explores how two faculty from different departments came together to create a doctoral course that allowed students to conduct an ethnographic study together over the course of one semester. Students learned to gather and analyze data and they wrote individual and co-authored manuscripts. We, the instructors, developed a special journal issue proposal to include all of the manuscripts from the project, and guided student writing well after the course had ended.  Our goal is for students to have peer-reviewed articles as the eventual outcome of the course. We discuss planning and coordinating the course, along with the inevitable speed bumps that were part of the process.
