The Experience of Nursing Students From a Developing Nation Using the Internet as an Educational Resource; Ed.D. Dissertation, Teachers College, Columbia University
Using a qualitative phenomenological method, this study's semi-structured interviews illuminate the meaning of the lived experience of nursing students from a developing nation, Malawi, Africa, in using the Internet as an educational resource. Data verification were achieved through participant confirmation of content and interpretation of transcribed interviews. Analysis proceeded according to van Manen's qualitative phenomenological method.
Five essential themes emerged from the students stories of their experiences. The participants shared how the Internet is beneficial in helping them create and maintain interpersonal connections with family and friends. They also described how they use the Internet to find information, which helps to make learning easy. They described stories of adapting information to fit their culture, and using the information they find from developed nations as a comparative standard for care. Finally, the participants described the challenges of learning to use technology, the technical difficulties they experience and their perceptions of how difficult it would be to complete their studies without Internet access.
Ultimately, the Internet provides these undergraduate nursing students a window of hope. These students know how to provide quality nursing care, and to bring change to the lives of those they serve by searching for and using the information they find on the Internet and through linked research databases. Researching the lived experience of the nursing students using the Internet as an educational resource provides insight into the experiences of the students, and the value there is strengthening the Internet availability for the college communities in these nations.
