Abstract

YouTube and other massively popular video-sharing (like Vimeo) websites have become familiar resources for librarians, instructors, technologists, and information professionals. YouTube is an excellent resource, not only in finding information for patrons, but also for reaching out to them. The YouTube format and visual layout is now familiar to novice searchers and is often a ‘first stop’ for informational, educational, entertainment, and social content. In fact, the main challenge to YouTube is its size and scope. Quality of content on YouTube also varies. The searcher needs to be thorough in their evaluation of the results. Information and meta (visual, media, format, etc.) literacies play a key role in our evaluation of the videos and channels found on YouTube and other video sharing websites.

This chapter will provide some tips and tricks to navigating YouTube, narrowing search terms, and provide other tools that will help librarians, teachers, and educational technologists utilize YouTube as important resource in teaching, learning, and research.
