Dr. Juan Pablo Sarmiento is Research Professor at the Latin American and Caribbean Center, College of Arts & Sciences and the Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work, located at Florida International University. He has more than 30 years professional and research experience in the fields of health, health education, risk assessment, and disaster management in Latin America and the Caribbean. His work encompasses a wide range of activities, including the design and execution of mitigation programs, early warning systems, and damage assessment and needs analyses, as well as responding to emergencies and disasters. He also has extensive experience in the evaluation of health and nutrition systems, institutional capacity building in disaster-prone countries, and post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction programs, with a special emphasis on shelters and environmental recovery. Finally, Dr. Sarmiento has academic preparation and experience in the design, management, and evaluation of projects in the field of public administration, with a particular focus on government and public sector interaction with NGO’s and PVO’s.
