Abstract

The Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association regularly receives inquiries from lawyers, clients, and surviving spouses about lawyers who leave the practice of law for various reasons. While there is currently no one answer for all situations, a lawyer can be proactive in avoiding or minimizing potential problems with some advance planning.

To this end, a joint committee composed of members of the Professional Ethics Committee and the Small Firm and Solo Practitioner Committee was formed to consider the practical and ethical issues in the disposition of a law practice. The committee members include Lee A. Koosed, Crede Calhoun, Jack P. Sahl, Scott Rawlings, Robert R. Hussey II and Benjamin F. Farah.

This manual is a result of the committee's work and is intended to provide guidance and direction to the legal community in considering and planning in these areas.
