Abstract

The entertainment industry is a major contributor to the nation's economy. The business has become increasingly global and complex, and lawyers continue to play key roles in its phenomenal growth. The practice of entertainment law is competitive and involves a myriad of skills. Marketing, advertising, selling, networking, and deal-making are common business activities for agents, managers, and lawyers. As a result, entertainment lawyers often resemble agents and managers in their work. Lawyers, however, must conform to ethical standards established in codes of professional responsibility to maintain licensure. This article reviews recent developments in the law of professional responsibility, discusses key rules, examines proactive roles for lawyers in the industry, and suggests ways for entertainment lawyers to avoid rules violations.
