Abstract

In the Purposeful Algebraic Activity project the authors have produced a teaching program of spreadsheet-based tasks, using purpose and utility as the framework for task design. This paper looks in detail at the design of one of the tasks, using the notions of visibility and invisibility to examine examples of pupils' activity when working on this task and the role which perceptions of purpose play in the way in which transparency emerges.
