The Far East Comes Near Autobiographical Accounts of Southeast Asian Students in America
The Far East Comes Near (1989)
Abstract
Listen to the voices of these new Americans. Their stories are chilling, poignant but full of hope. Vietnamese, Laotian, or Cambodian, they share many of the same ancient Asian values: discipline, reverence of family, and a deep respect for education. These values seem peculiarly compatible with the Protestant work ethic. Like their predecessors, these latest Southeast Asian immigrants feel an enormous pressure to excel, which is coupled with an equally strong desire to prove themselves in their newly adopted country. Many will be more than equal to the task, but for every Westinghouse Science scholar and valedictorian, there is a young person of average or below average ability. Each deserves to be nurtured. Each has a unique contribution to make. Each must make his or her own way.
