I teach undergraduates and graduate students rhetoric and composition at Marquette University, where my abiding interests in performance and pedagogy inform both my historical scholarship and my contemporary writing research. I have worked on the Stanford Study of Writing since it began in 2001, and at UT-Knoxville I led the Embodied Literacies Project with co-Principal Investigators Stacey Pigg and Mary Jo Reiff. Currently, I am working with Lee Nickoson on a Mellon-supported study of writing at Kenyon College, and I am involved in the ongoing development of the Research Exchange (REx), an online resource for writing researchers. As a historian, my attention is usually focused on the British long eighteenth century, and I am especially interested in the contribution public theater made to the formation of modern rhetoric between 1656 and 1800. In 2009, I led an RSA Institute Workshop on performance and the rhetorical tradition, and I am guest editing the inaugural issue of CCC Online, which will feature new work on performance. My published scholarship appears in College Composition and Communication, College Forum, Composition Studies, Stories of Mentoring, and the forthcoming collection, New Directions in Writing Studies Research: Methods and Models for Rhetoric, Composition, and Literacy edited by Lee Nickoson and Mary P. Sheridan.
