The Madrid Protocol and Trademark Harmonization

Jeffrey M. Samuels, University of Akron School of Law

Abstract

Over the past few years, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized body of the United Nations, has undertaken efforts to streamline and simplify the procedures associated with the practice of trademark law around the world. One initiative, a “Protocol Relating to the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks” (Madrid Protocol), should make it easier and cheaper for trademark owners to obtain and maintain protection abroad. Another initiative, the “Trademark Law Treaty,” would harmonize various administrative and procedural aspects of international trademark practice.
