Born to Bolivian parents who sought exile in Venezuela, Javier Sánchez de
Lozada's own research interests are in the areas of law and economics and project
finance. He earned a bachelor's degree in economics and philosophy from Swarthmore
College, and a master's in public administration from the Woodrow Wilson School of
Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. He received his law degree from
the Universidad Católica Boliviana, where he taught law and economics. He also taught
economics at the Academia Diplomática Boliviana "Rafael Bustillo" in El Alto.
