Visible M(Others): Images of Parenting in Visual Culture

Abstract
The exhibition presents new perspectives on traditional, contemporary, alternative or imagined parenting in relation to a visible/invisible landscape of maternal visual culture. Newly created and recent works examine transitions into parenting, unexpected and inverted parenthood, societal pressures to mother and parent, “mommyblogging,” protection, provision, over-protective parenting, “(in)visible” paternal imagery, leaving children to their own devices, the dislocation and displacement of the mothering body, and gender based media socialization of young children.

Exhibiting artists include Jim Budde, Brooke Burton and Ted Apel, Terra Feast, Jill Fitterer, Belinda Isley, New Catalogue (Luke Batten and Jon Sadler), Jill Lawley, Benjamin Love, Surel Mitchell, Grant Olsen, Amy Pence-Brown and Shannon Paterson, Margo Proksa, Dan Scott, Elizabeth Sloan, and April VanDeGrift.
